Hundreds demonstrated in Tel Aviv against IDF's operation in Gaza Strip 05/10/2004

More then 200 demonstrators from various Israeli peace movements joined Courage to Refuse members, in protesting against the IDF's operation "Days of Penitence", taking place for six days now in Gaza. The operation is aimed to stop the launching of Qassam rockets towards the Israeli town of Sderot, which is located within the 1967 borders. However, ministers of Sharon's government, as well as IDF high ranks officers, have already doubted the efficiency of such an operation, questioning its ability to stop the rockets' firing.

Courage to Refuse members protested against Sharon's decision to put IDF's soldiers at such a risk, sending them to a dangerous activity that contributes nothing to the security of the citizens of Sderot, but takes a heavy toll in civilian lives on the Palestinian side. Courage to Refuse members have also protested against the policy of collective punishment, which is both a violation of international law as well as an idea foreign to Jewish values.

"The residents of Sderot are paying the price for Israel's settlements in Gaza", said the refuseniks. "If PM Sharon really cares for Sderot residents' security, he'd better evacuate the settlements from Gaza, as he had promised. Sharon, who had entangled the IDF in Lebanon a few years ago, is now repeating the same mistake by sending our soldiers to their death in Gaza."
