Dozens demonstrate in front of PM's home: Take the Settlers' Guns away! 09/03/2005

Dozens of demonstrators from several peace movements demonstrated in front of the Prime Minister's residence under the slogan "Take their guns away". The protesters bore signs that said "one army is enough" and "we will not surrender to political terrorism". The demonstrators explained the reasons why the settlers should be disarmed:

  1. To prevent pressure on the democratic institutions via the use of arms. The Israeli government decided to retreat from Gaza. The right wing opposition to this decision relies heavily on the fact that they are armed and threaten to use force. A democracy cannot allow concurrent armed militias to undermine the government's authority.
  2. To Protect IDF soldiers engaged in evacuation activities. During the past months we have witnessed an increase in violence practiced by Jewish settlers against IDF soldiers. As right wing rabbis encourage all sorts of resistance, including physical violence, we must make sure that no Israeli law enforcement officer is hurt during the retreat from Gaza.
  3. To prevent further deterioration of the regional peace. Hundreds of cases of settlers' violence against Palestinian peasants have been recorded since the beginning of the Intifada. The settlers have learned that abuse, harassment and even violent assault of innocent Palestinians are often ignored by the Israeli authorities, and the racial violence at certain settlements has become habitual. These incidents, beyond being criminal and immoral, strengthen extremist groups among the Palestinians and prevent any chance of regional peace.

The demonstration organized by a coalition of peace movements lead by CTR, and was extensively covered by the Israeli media, including a prime time news item on channel 1 news. In addition, members of the coalition have met with Knesset Member from several parties of the house in order to promote legislation on the issue.

In the upcoming weeks, CTR and other members of the coalition are planning to hold several vigils and massive signing of citizens on the petition calling to disarm the settlers.
